Kolkata Court Sentences Convict Sanjoy Roy To Life Imprisonment In RG Kar Rape-Murder Case
Sanjoy Roy has been awarded life imprisonment and a fine of Rs 50k by the learned Sealdah Additional judge and Session court.
Sessions Judge Anirban Das held that the case did not fall into the “rarest of rare” categories, warranting a death sentence. It was further held that the state government would have to pay the victim’s family a compensation of Rs 17 lakhs due to the fate suffered by her.
Earlier the CBI and the victim’s family demanded the maximum sentence of the death penalty for Roy.
The court had been fortified, and nearly 500 policemen had been deployed to prevent untoward incidents.
Prior to the judgment West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee declined to comment on the quantum of sentence expected for the accused. “I had earlier demanded
the death penalty, but it depends on the judge and how the case has been framed,” she said.
The CBI court charged the civic volunteer under Section 64 (rape), Section 66 (punishment for causing death), and Section 103 (murder).
