Senior advocate Iqbal Chagla, one of India’s leading lawyers, passed away on Sunday.He was unwell for some time and died at the age of 85.
Iqbal Chagla, the son of former Bombay High Court Chief Justice M C Chagla. He was the father of the sitting judge of the Bombay HC, Justice R I Chagla.
As per the sources, his last rites will be performed on Monday at the Worli crematorium.
Born in 1939, Chagla had obtained an MA in History and Law from Cambridge University. He was then called to the Bombay Bar and was conferred with the Senior Advocate’s gown in the 1970s.
From 1990 to 1999, Chagla held the office of the President of the Bombay Bar Association for three terms.
Chagla’s commitment to the profession extended beyond the courtroom. He was a member of the Bar Association of India’s Executive Committee and the National Legal Services Authority.
Despite being offered a direct judgeship in the Supreme Court, which could have led to him becoming the Chief Justice of India, he humbly declined, prioritising his role as an advocate and mentor.
Iqbal Chagla’s legacy is one of unwavering dedication to justice, a commitment to legal ethics, and an unshakable belief in the power of education. As the legal fraternity mourns his loss, his contributions will continue to inspire generations to come.The Bombay Bar Association in a release mourned the death of Chagla and said his contributions to the legal field are immeasurable and his legacy will forever be remembered.
